NADIA CAMBOURS, THE ARTIST LIGHTS THE SWING
Meeting Nadia Cambours in the Ha Noi’s sunny when she has a performance tour at Le club of Sofitel Metropole hotel. Appearing in a simple black dress and the serene face without power, a long smooth necklace, the artist looks simple but brilliant. Taking sit down in few minutes, the necklace was worn down by her side of thin belt. Her subtlety could be seen through the little action she makes.
Born in the North side of France, Nadia Cambours is endowed with the Swing classic voice. She has tried out dancing, modeling, acting. But she has her heart set on singing Swing, the noble style of the 1930s jazz. “I was born to sing, I‘m able to do nothing but sing” - She said.
The Hanoi audiences and musicians have been surprised and sublimated following up her impromptu performance. The way she sings and dances is always in creating and exciting. She has never repeated the same song for 15 continuously performing nights in the tour at the Metropole club. Her voice and musical sound has attracted all the doors opening and many guests came out their rooms going to the French classic architect to see her closely.
The Swing is a hard style of Jazz. It not only requires the artists having a lot of singing techniques, a high quality voice but also demands the artists to be able to dance Swing well. The jazz audiences are very picky.
“I have been charmed by the music of the 1920-1940 Swing. It is so smooth, quite, fun and elegant.”- She answered why she has chosen to perform such a unique genre of music, and added, “Jazz is misery because that is the music of the black slaves. Before Swing, Jazz is expressed through the sad Blues. Swing is happiness. Listen Swing is fun, outside fun but behind bright smile is tears which is hided wisely. I would love to the show of subtle affection. Sadness is hidden and its taste likes the tiny particles in a cocktail glass which blended perfectly”
“Swing is not only the music its show is much more, that is the life of the black in American prior of 20th when they were ostracized. Jazz has helped them overcome those destitute days”- she adds.
From the natural beginning, the talent artist learned jazz by her grandmother when she was a child. At that time, there were few old women and children living in the small houses. They sing and danced together to forget their misses and worries about their man was in battles of war time. The grandmother taught Nadia how to keep the tone, release rate and the word of songs. She had taken a vocal class then practiced hardly every day.
Keep in mind the voice is particular instrument which must to reserve and enhanced by practice every day, and living with Picasso’s note “Bad artist copy. Good artist steal.” It means that “working in art world, you should copy, copy the works of one who you are admired, of ordinary people every day, when you are the wrong copy that is you”.- she smiled and told that she even has practiced every hour in communications and talking. She always control her sound and listening the way others speaking.
Nadia admits to having influenced by two Swing legends- Billie Holiday and Anita in prior years of her career. The result from her “copy” and practices bright out the “wrong copy” Nadia Cambours – the Queen of Swing today. The Queen has conducted dozens of touring across the continents, in the famous and luxury bars, clubs in Hong Kong, Seoul, Taiwan, Casablanca,… performing with Oliver Smith Jazz band. She also has released some Swing CDs and written the lyrics.
Jazz is not popular music with masses. The artist has a lot of difficult in keeping up with it. But Nadia staked her career with Jazz “not only for admires, enjoys, but also Jazz has become my close friend since my childhood. Moreover, I sing jazz because I want to save it and to steer it away from the bias that it belongs to the black community. Jazz contains all level of human affections like happy, angry, quite, noisy sense, so it belongs to people over the world”- she shared
